ICON is proud that Rua Al Madina Landscape and Public Realm project has been shortlisted for the Landscape Middle East Awards 2025 in the “Cultural Heritage & Living Landscapes” category. This recognition is a true honor and holds special significance as it marks our second project to be shortlisted this year, following “The Source,” which was nominated in the “Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration” category.
Situated within one of the world’s most sacred sites, the landscape design embraces the Kingdom’s vision2030 while cleverly responding to the city’s growing population of pilgrims and visitors, and honouring its profound religious, cultural, and historical significance. The development aims to drive national transformation, attract public investment, enhance quality of life, support the Hajj and Umrah experience, and celebrate the Kingdom’s evolving identity.
The landscape master plan reinterprets modernity through a contemporary lens that remains rooted in tradition, ensuring the design reflects the enduring traces of the past. Guided by this vision, distinct design languages were applied across various zones based on their function and visual intent. Following extensive studies, a traditional design approach was adopted for the main corridors leading to Al Masjid an Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque PBUH). The boulevards feature a linear design language, with shaded seating areas arranged at regular intervals and date palms defining the medians. In contrast, the parks and ‘sikkas’ follow a more naturalistic theme, creating a softer, organic atmosphere. Despite the diversity in design expression, the overall composition achieves cohesion through the consistent use of materials, finishes, and a unified visual character.
