A Harmonious Blend of Heritage, Spirituality, and Nature: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque

Celebrating Eid Al-Adha this year, ICON would like to bring attention to our landscape design for the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque—Al Ain’s largest and most iconic mosque—offers a welcoming and immersive experience that beautifully combines cultural heritage, spiritual reflection, and thoughtful design. Situated on a historically significant site that includes the remains of an early Islamic mud-brick mosque, the project provides a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with both the past and present in a meaningful way.

The outdoor spaces are designed to be both functional and serene. Shaded walkways, comfortable seating, and fragrant planting invite visitors to pause and reflect in a calm and respectful environment. Two xeriscape gardens at the eastern entrance use water-efficient plants and soft gravel patterns to echo the beauty of Islamic geometry, while meditation gardens near the minarets offer peaceful spots for quiet moments between prayers.

At the heart of the design is the 6,500 sqm Sahan—the main outdoor worship area—featuring elegant white marble paving with subtle grey lines, leading into a striking 450 sqm central water feature. On either side, the Islamic display gardens introduce visitors to plant species referenced in the Qur’an, curated in collaboration with a MOPA agricultural advisor, adding a layer of spiritual education to the landscape.

Sustainability is central to the project, with native plant species, efficient irrigation using treated water (TSE), and environmentally conscious materials all chosen to suit the region’s climate. A dedicated archaeological park preserves and showcases excavated remains of the early mosque and historic falaj system, offering shaded seating and interpretive features for a deeper understanding of the site’s legacy.

The site’s gentle changes in elevation enhance the visitor journey, offering different perspectives of the gardens, water features, and mosque architecture. Multiple access points—including a VIP entrance with a landscaped plaza and water feature—ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for all.

Guided by Estidama principles and informed by comprehensive archaeological and environmental studies, ICON’s design reflects a harmonious balance between sustainability, cultural preservation, and the spiritual essence of the space—creating an environment that is both inspiring and deeply rooted in its historical and cultural context.
