Description

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an architectural marvel and a prominent tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi. ICON was assigned to complete the grounds and design a distinctive 20-hectare landscape that would complement the mosque’s architecture, enhance the visitor experience, and better connect the mosque to the city.

Taking inspiration from the mosque’s central design element, an artistic floral motif, the landscape park extension was carefully crafted to create a visually cohesive experience while guiding visitors along beautifully manicured walkways leading to the mosque.

In line with our commitment to sustainability, the new landscape design adopted a xeriscape approach, utilizing over 70% gravel and sand surfaces. This enhanced the floral motif and provided unobstructed panoramic views of the iconic dome skyline. The integration of porous materials, such as gravel, in the overflow parking areas facilitated natural drainage, improved the aesthetic quality, and reduced surface temperatures. This sustainable approach preserved the visual appeal of the grounds and created a more environmentally friendly and comfortable setting for visitors.
